Master of Science

Bioinformatics is the crucial key to solving the big problems in life sciences and medicine, because their size and complexity require special computer programs and great computing power. Studying bioinformatics therefore means actively shaping the future and our graduates work on the most exciting questions in these fields. Bioinformatics in Tübingen has a successful history and nowadays it is embedded in the Institute for Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics (IBMI). Cutting-edge interdisciplinary research at the IBMI is possible by bringing together computer science, the life sciences, and medicine. Finally, close collaboration with local research institutes (e.g. Max Planck and Cyber Valley) round off Tübingen University as an excellent place to pursue a Master’s program in bioinformatics.

Master of Science

Duration: 4 semesters

Credits: 120 ECTS

Summer semester
mid Dec. - 15 Jan (Non-EU) / 15 March (EU)

Winter semester
mid June - 15 July (Non-EU) / 15 Sept. (EU)

A special feature of our program is that it can also be taken with a Bachelor in biology and related subjects as well as in computer science. This is possible because it is adapted to integrate all these backgrounds. However, if you don´t have a first degree in Bioinformatics, please take into account that you need to take additional courses for which German language is required.

The program is highly flexible and students are encouraged to tailor the curriculum to their academic interests. The course profile includes genomics and transcriptomics, protein bioinformatics and computer-aided drug design, microbiome analysis and systems biology. Furthermore, students deepen their knowledge in computer science as well as the life sciences. After graduation, students will be excellently prepared to pursue a PhD program or for a career in the growing field of biotechnology or the pharmaceutical industry.
